Appointment Reminders

I offer anecdotal evidence on the value of appointment reminders. A dental practice in Grand Rapids, Michigan neglected to perform reminder calls one day. The no show rate was extraordinarly high for the affected day and some patients specifically said they forgot their appointments without the reminder calls. Separately, the practice quit sending appointment reminder postcards for three months. Last minute cancels were higher in those three months than ever before.

Yes, we would like to think that the patient would take responsibility for their oral health and remember their appointments without the friendly reminder, but they do become dependent on them - one less thing to worry about.

"After all Dr. X always reminds me, why should I write it down."

By the way, I always advise confirming the appointment two days in advance. If the patient backs out of the appointment during the confirmation call, you have 48 rather than 24 hours to fill it again.
